As part of the borg, you become a small part of a whole (the collective), and lose all sense of individuality.

Every once in a while, someone is "rescued" from the Borg and they relearn how to be an individual.

The Borg Collective is a collection of beings

who constantly have the thoughts of the others in their heads. How does a civilization get anything done through that cacophony of voices?

That is where the Queen comes in. She is what provides order and direction to that mismatch of voices and thoughts.

Think of a Borg Queen like a Bee Queen.

Born humanoid, they are almost immediately implanted with bio-chips that link their brains to a collective consciousness

via a unique subspace frequency emitted by each drone. This collective consciousness is experienced by the Borg as "thousands" of voices

— they are collectively aware, but not aware of themselves as separate individuals.
